In this Episode of Gov101, we learn about SPLOST, the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. SPLOST is a 1% sales tax on all purchases made in Chatham County, which is used to fund critical infrastructure. Because this is a sales tax, it means that when visitors buy something in Chatham County, their money can be used to pay for these projects. According to a Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce Study, about 40% of SPLOST funds come from people who live more than 50 miles away from Chatham County.

This November, SPLOST 8 is on the ballot. With voter approval, this tax can keep these projects funded without the need to raise property taxes. Use this website to see all the past projects funded by SPLOST, as well as the ones on the docket for SPLOST 8: https://splost.chathamcountyga.gov/
