“Plays Well With Others”
The Doggie Carnival in Foryth Park was a great opportunity to meet some great dogs
and some of the great people who care for them at Chatham County Animal Services
At the recent Doggie Carnival in Forsyth Park, happy doggies lounged and romped on the grass and collected treats and head pats at all the tents set up by local dog-themed venders and services. Teeny dogs, BIG DOGS, old doggos and new pups – every carnival-goer who saw them had to smile, and the dogs themselves were all smiling, just because they were out with their people.
Some of the dogs in the park were there to find the people who would be their furever families. They were there with the people who love and care for them while trying to make that happen for them. Chatham County Animal Services team members and volunteers brought four of their adoptable dogs along to meet and greet other carnival-goers. Maple, Lt. Moon, The Machine, and Milli had fun in the park while representing all the other hopeful animals at Animal Services who are waiting to be adopted.
Sometimes it can be love at first sight – Milli was such a well-behaved lady at the carnival that she caught someone’s eye right away. Meanwhile, back at the shelter, two of Animal Service’s longest residents, Diana and Justice, also got chosen. Justice had been a resident of the shelter for three months waiting for her perfect place as an Only Dog, and Diana had been cared for by Animal Services for almost a year!
Animal Services works hard to live up to the “services” name. They house and care for many dogs and cats while devoting tremendous time and creative energy to finding appropriate homes for them. They also support pet owners in our community by connecting them to local resources that can help them keep their pets in their homes. Thay partner with various rescues and nonprofits to list lost/found animals online, so that lost pets can go home faster. They have veterinary services on staff to care for shelter animals and the partner with Pet Fix to spay or neuter adopted animals. They coordinate services such as rabies and microchip clinics and license tags for dogs.
(FYI, every Spring they see an uptick in animals that wander off following all the fresh scents and chasing all the active wildlife. Animal Services staff wants you to know that up-to-date microchips and ID tags are the very best things you can do to help your pet get home to you if it gets lost!)
If you’re an animal lover and want to brighten days for animals while they wait to be adopted, you should check out volunteering with Animals Services! Animal Services Volunteers are fun people who play with dogs or take them on walks. They’re kind people who just spend time with shy animals, petting them and talking to them, to help them come out of their shells. They’re great people whose idea of a great time is a Saturday hanging out at a doggie carnival in the park or a Wednesday evening hanging out with pups at Starland Yards for Yappy Hour. (Go meet them at the next one of those, on June 18th from 6:00 - 8:00pm. The theme is Doggie Olympics!)
You can learn about volunteering here: https://animalservices.chathamcountyga.gov/Volunteer/ And here’s the link to learn about another way you can help – by donating items that support Animal Services’ efforts to provide enrichment for the animals they care for: https://animalservices.chathamcountyga.gov/Donations/
And always, if there is room in your heart and your home to adopt a shelter animal, that’s Number 1 on Animal Services’ wish list every day! If you happen to have a LOTof room and are ready for a LOT of love, Animal Services is currently running a “Go Big AND Go Home” adoption special. Through May 24th, all dogs 45+ pounds have a $0 adoption fee! (And did you know that Team Chatham members can always adopt for free?)
Animal Services LOVES it when adopters check in on social media or bring their furbabies by to say hello and show off how well they’re doing.
